Worn on the coats of the Men’s and Women’s Formal Dress and Mess Dress uniforms, Brigadier General shoulder boards are designed to mimic the appearance of pin-on or embroidered insignia worn on uniforms featuring epaulettes. For Brigadier Generals (O-7), this means the single star is centered on the board between the shoulder board button and the edge of the board that rests over the coat’s shoulder seam. This contrasts with the design of shoulder boards for Colonels (O-6) and lower, where the insignia is sewn onto the board 5/8-inch from the edge.

Shoulder boards are secured to the Mess Dress coat by unbuttoning the board and sliding the bottom half through shoulder loops attached to the coat and buttoning it when properly positioned. At The Salute Uniforms, we ship all new Mess Dress coats with free shoulder loops, and we also offer a loop-sewing service so the coats will arrive ready for the shoulder boards to be slid into place.

While the silver sleeve braid worn on Mess Dress coat is sold separately, customers purchasing a new Mess Dress coat and sleeve braid may opt for our braid-sewing and sleeve-hemming service.
