Army and Air Force Brigadier Generals have the option of wearing cap rank insignia of varying sizes. In the Army, General Officers may choose from insignia with stars in Regular (1"), Medium (3/4"), and Miniature (5/8") size; Air Force Generals wear insignia featuring either Regular or Medium stars.
The default selection for our cap rank insignia for Brigadier Generals in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force is a ¾-inch silver star, and is authorized for wear on several types of headgear in both services. In the Army, this insignia is worn centered on the flash of the black beret or on the approved flash of organizational issue headgear (colored berets for Airborne, Special Forces, and Security Assistance Command personnel). It is also worn on the left curtain of the Heritage Green Garrison Cap that is part of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) introduced in 2018.
Before the black beret was introduced as standard headgear in 2001, the nonsubdued pin-on metal Brigadier General rank insignia was also authorized for wear on the old Garrison Cap, which was manufactured in two colors (Army Green Shades 489 and 491) and issued as part of the Class A Army Green uniform. In the Air Force, nonsubdued pin-on rank insignia is worn by Brigadier Generals on the General Officer Flight Cap. It is worn on the wearer’s left and placed 1- ½ inches from the flight cap’s front edge.
