Although Garrison Caps are no longer authorized for wear in the Regular Army or its Reserve Components (Army National Guard and Army Reserve), we continue to carry them at The Salute Uniforms so that veterans are able to purchase authentic headgear that conforms to the regulations that were in place when they served, as well as to meet the needs of uniform collectors and media production companies.

This Garrison Cap for Warrant Officers features the silver-and-black cord edge braid that was first worn in World War II. Manufactured new to meet or surpass all relevant Army regulations, the cap features a leather sweatband for added comfort.

Although officers wore insignia of rank on their overseas caps during World War I, it wasn’t until 1942 that the Army addressed the subject and spelled out how rank insignia were to be worn on the soft, foldable caps, now dubbed “garrison caps”—and it took until 1943 to address how Warrant Officers were to wear their insignia. A revision to Army Regulations 600-40 specified that “insignia of grade will be worn by officers, warrant officers, and flight officers on the garrison cap, on the left side, centered on the curtain, with center of the insignia 1 ½ inches from the front.” Bars were to be worn perpendicular to the bottom of the cap; eagles were worn beak to the front.

Later regulations changed the placement slightly, with officers wearing insignia of grade centered on the left curtain just 1 inch from the front crease. The creation of Airborne forces and insignia led to another change in which any officer personnel “authorized to wear the Airborne insignia…may wear it centered on the right curtain of the garrison cap, 1 inch from the front crease” with the glider facing forward.
