The nonsubdued First Sergeant (E-8) chevrons are manufactured in a way that could be described as color-coded: the background upon which the golden or tan chevrons are sewn matches the uniform coat, jacket, or shirt onto which they will be sewn. In the 2021 edition of DA 670-1,
Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, nonsubdued sew-on grade insignia—chevrons, for short—are manufactured with either a white, blue, or Heritage Green background. Gold chevrons with a white background are sewn onto the sleeves of the White Mess jacket; gold chevrons with a blue background are attached to the Army Service / Dress and Blue Mess jackets; and tan chevrons on Heritage Green are worn on the Army Green Service Uniform Coat or Shirt (long- or short-sleeve). Regardless of the uniform or garment, nonsubdued sew-on grade insignia is placed midway between the shoulder seam and the wearer’s elbow.
But at The Salute Uniforms, we also offer First Sergeant chevrons on a green background for wear with the now-discontinued Class A/B Army Greens Uniform—"Army Greens—which for over 50 years was the primary dress uniform of the United States Army. Obviously, the old Class A/B Army Green Uniform cannot be worn by active members of the Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard, but veterans may wear it to functions where military dress uniforms are appropriate.
