U.S. ARMY ENLISTED MALE ASU SERVICE CAP DEVICE

December 2022 will mark the 105th anniversary of the Army’s introduction of a universal cap device in lieu of branch insignia for its enlisted personnel: a 1.5” gold-colored disk with a gold-colored metal rendering of the obverse of the Great Seal of the United States, commonly referred to as the Coat of Arms of the United States. Our enlisted male cap device is plated in 22K gold and is secured through to the eyelet on the front of the service cap and the drill sergeant hat.

The cap device remained unchanged for all enlisted personnel until the early 1950s, when the Army introduced blue-colored disks on which the device is mounted when it is worn on the headgear of Infantry personnel (similar disks were also created for collar devices). Additionally, both officers and enlisted Infantry soldiers were issued light-blue cords to be worn on the right shoulder. The moves were taken to improve the morale of the Army’s Infantrymen, who were bearing the brunt of combat duties in the Korean War.
