The design of the pin-on metal E-2 Private Chevron is identical to the sew-on rank insignia except in size; the pin-on is considerably smaller because of where it is worn. Nonsubdued (i.e., gold) pin-on rank insignia is worn by enlisted personnel in all branches and at all grades on the collar of the Army Service Uniform shirt, the windbreaker, and the black all-weather coat.

The nonsubdued pin-on Private chevron is centered on both collars with the centerline of the insignia (imagine a line drawn through the middle of the two “wings” of the chevron) bisecting the points of each collar. Wear of the nonsubdued pin-on is also authorized for wear on the garrison Culinary smock and the Medical Assistant Smock.

Subdued pin-on grade insignia is authorized for wear on Utility uniforms and the cold-weather jacket, officially designated the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS) jacket. It may also be worn on helmet camouflage cover.
