The distinctive chevron rank insignia for Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeants—it is the only insignia with two rockers—is manufactured in two sizes (large for males and small for females) and come in a variety of color combinations to accommodate the Dress, Service, and Evening Dress uniforms. Standard gold chevrons on a red background are worn on the Blue Dress coat; green chevrons on a red background are for the Service “A” Uniform coat; and green chevrons on khaki are worn exclusively on the khaki shirt (both short- and long-sleeve). Additionally, Gunnery Sergeants also wear distinctive 1890's-style gold-on-red chevrons on the sleeves of the Staff Noncommissioned Office Evening Dress jacket; these are worn centered on the sleeve's outer half with the top of the insignia three inches from the shoulder.
Standard Gunnery Sergeant chevrons are worn point up and centered on the outer half of the sleeves. On coats and the long-sleeve khaki shirt, the insignia is sewn on so that its top point is four inches from the shoulder seam. Men wear the insignia centered between the bottom of the sleeve and the shoulder seam on the short-sleeve khaki shirt; on the women’s short-sleeve khaki, the chevrons are centered between the shoulder seam and the peak of the cuff embroidery.
