U.S. NAVY LOGISTICS SPECIALIST (LS) RATING BADGE

Created in October, 2009, the Logistics Specialist rating (LS) combines the job of three now disestablished ratings: Storekeeper (SK), Postal Clerk (PC), and Aviation Storekeeper (AK). Sailors who meet the rating’s minimum Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) score of 104 (VE + AR) are eligible to attend the LS Class “A” Technical School at the Naval Technical Training Center in Meridian, Mississippi.

The 40-day training course is self-paced and consists of computer-aided instruction and related applications to evaluate skill performance. Basic knowledge of Supply and Postal logistic functions is emphasized, along with the responsibilities of the Naval Supply System and Military Postal System. Sailors who have not been designated for training as Logistics Specialist or non-rated Sailors can strike for this rating by taking online courses and other means and achieving a passing score.

Logistics is one of the fastest growing employment fields in the world, and Sailors serving as Logistics Specialists will find numerous opportunities to earn credentials that will go far in ensuring their success in the civilian sector after their Naval Career has ended. In fact, several of these credentials can be earned while Sailors are still in their Seaman apprenticeships (E1 to E3 paygrade).

For instance, a Seaman Apprentice (E2) is eligible to earn the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) from the American Production and Inventory Control Society. As a Seaman (E3), they can earn their Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. While many might take such a certification lightly, the difference it can make to a Sailor re-entering the civilian employment marketplace is significant. According to a 2013 International Data Corporation report, job-seekers who hold the MOS certification can earn up to $16,000 more in annual salary than their peers who lack it.
