The 113rd Field Artillery Brigade was originally created in 1926 as part of the North Carolina National Guard at Greensboro as the 252nd Coast Artillery. The unit was inducted into Federal Service in 1940, shortly before America entered the second World War. The 252d was deployed to Northern France for the duration of the conflict. The unit was reorganized and re-designated as the 540th Field Artillery Battalion during the war in 1944. After the end of the war, the Battalion was brought back to the US and inactivated at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, in December, 1945.
While inactive the unit was re-designated as the 505th Field Artillery Battalion in 1946. The unit was reorganized and activated once more in Greensboro in 1949, and was also Federally recognized. In 1954 the unit became a part of the 30th Infantry Division, and became the 30th Division Artillery. The unit was consolidated, and the reconsolidated units were remade into the 30th Infantry Division Artillery in 1959. It was relieved from its assignment to the 30th Infantry Division in 1973 and became the 113th Field Artillery Group. The 113th took on its current designation of the 113th Field Artillery Brigade in 1978.
The Brigade currently resides in Greensboro, where it was originally created. The 113th’s motto, displayed on its Distinctive Unit Insignia, is “Honor Valor Victory”.
