The unit crest of the 113th Field Artillery Brigade differs from the otherwise identical Combat Service Identification Badge (CSIB) and unit patch. While the patch and CSIB possess heraldry meant to serve as a reminder of the unit’s heritage, the crest stands as a reminder of the 113th’s service and mission statement. The original crest was approved for the 113th Field Artillery Group in 1974. When the unit took on its current designation of the 113th Field Artillery Brigade in 1978, the crest was re-designated.
The flag in the center is simply the state flag of North Carolina turned horizontally, with the NC description in the blue section replaced by the fleur-de-lis. The flag is present due to the long history that the 113th Field Artillery Brigade has with the state of NC. It was first activated in Greensboro, NC as a part of the NC National Guard, and currently resides in that same capacity. The fleur-de-lis represents the unit’s first combat missions. During the second World War, the unit (then the 252nd Coast Artillery) first actively served its country in the campaigns of Northern France. The colors of scarlet, seen on the scroll, and yellow are used to denote artillery units. The ten cannonballs stacked at the bottom represent the power, bravery, and readiness of the 113th. The motto of the unit is framed atop the scroll, “Honor Valor Victory”, qualities that the men of the 113th Field Artillery Brigade have always sought to emulate, on and off the field of battle.
