MARINE CORPS CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER 5 COLLAR INSIGNIA (CWO-5)

Although Congress established the grade of Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CWO-5) in 1992, over a quarter of a century later it is still found in only three of the five of the Armed Forces of the United States: the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. All three use the same CWO-5 insignia design—a single, thin colored stripe superimposed over the length of a 1st Lieutenant’s silver bar—but with a unique color for each service; Scarlet for the Marine Corps, blue for the Navy, and black for the Army.

Marine Corps uniform regulations call for CWO-5s to wear their insignia of grade as a collar device on the khaki shirt (short- and long-sleeve), the Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform (MCCUU), and Maternity coats with MARPAT camouflage patterns. The insignia must be worn at all times by CWO-5 personnel when they’re wearing the Service Uniform, even though they also wear rank insignia on the epaulets of the Service coat. (You can add CWO-5 Service Uniform coat rank insignia to your shopping cart by clicking here.) Collar insignia are also required when wearing the Service or Dress sweater.

This same insignia is also employed as a cap-rank device for the Garrison Cap, but only one device is. Click here to purchase an individual CWO-5 rank insignia for wear on the Garrison Cap.
