Marine Corps uniform regulations call for Officers to wear metal insignia of grade on the shoulder straps (also called epaulets) of all uniform coats and jackets with the exception of the Evening Dress. Shiny colored insignia is worn on most uniforms, but Commanders may prescribe subdued insignia using drab brown and flat black for the Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform and other uniforms worn in the field.

Referred to as shoulder grade insignia, large pin-on metal insignia that are worn on the shoulder straps of coats and jackets are always placed so they are centered between the front and back edges of the strap. For the Chief Warrant Officer 5 shoulder grade insignia, orient it so that the long axis points forward and backward, making a right angle to the insignia’s center line (running from the shoulder strap button to the shoulder). With the insignia properly oriented and centered between the front and back edges of the shoulder strap, place it on the strap so that its outermost edge is 3/4” from the armhole seam.
