United States Marine Corps uniform regulations re-quire the wear of metal grade insignia of rank on every uniform except the Evening Dress (which calls for embroidered rank insignia). The insignia comes in two sizes, with the slightly larger devices worn on shoulder straps referred to by the eponymous designation shoulder grade insignia (smaller devices are designated collar grade, despite the fact that they are also worn on Garrison Caps). Metal grade insignia worn on coats and jackets are also called coat rank devices.

Chief Warrant Officers 4 wear their shoulder grade insignia on the shoulder straps of Dress and Service coats, the Tanker Jacket, and the All-Weather Coat. The insignia should be oriented so that its long axis is pointing to the wearer’s front and rear, forming 90-degree angles the center of the shoulder strap and its outer edges. Once properly aligned, place the insignia so that its outermost edge is three-quarters of an inch from the shoulder seam.
