It shares the three stripes and four rockers of the E-9 Master Gunnery Sergeant rank, but the star in the middle of the Marine Corps Sergeant Major insignia is a sign of the command authority wielded by the most senior of the Corps’ Staff Noncommissioned Officers (SNCOs).

The rank is as old as the Corps itself: the 11 July 1798 Congressional act establishing the Marine Corps gave the Commandant the authority to raise a staff including a Sergeant Major should the Corps ever “be ordered by the President to do duty on shore.” While Sergeant Majors share the same pay grade as Master Gunnery Sergeants, their role as senior enlisted advisors and consequent oversight of morale and discipline means they are considered to outrank Master Gunnys.

Designed for wear with civilian clothing, our USMC Sergeant Major tie tack is a colorful but tasteful symbol of a career culminating at the pinnacle of the Corps’ enlisted cadre. What’s more, its design allows it serve as a lapel pin or cap device. Buying it as a gift? Pick up several—they also make thoughtful additions to a treasured shadow box.

Note: For active-duty personnel Marine Corps uniform regulations authorize the standard-issue gold tie clasp as well as an optional tie clasp featuring the Marine Corps emblem (Eagle, Globe, and Anchor).
