U.S. ARMY MATERIEL COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

The United States Army Materiel Command Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was originally approved on 2 June 1969 for Army Materiel Command. It was redesignated for Material Development and Readiness Command, commonly called DARCOM on 23 February 1976, but was redesignated for Army Material Command on 23 November 1984. It was then cancelled on 24 December 1992, but on the same day its current design and motto was approved.

Many elements of the insignia were adapted from the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of and based on the mission of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. The white crenelated design underneath the word “America’s” that resembles the top of a fortified castle wall is a reference to command and control; the four merlons (white protusions into the yellow area) simulate cogs in a gear wheel and allude to the four functions of the command’s mission. The white areas at the top and on either side, taken together, simulate the letter “M” for “materiel,” and the globe denotes the worldwide scope of the Command’s responsibility to provide assistance for planning and executing logistics services of the Army elements of unified commands, specified commands, and other customers in the United States and foreign countries, with scarlet representing the military and blue for industry. The unit motto, “America’s Arsenal For The Brave” is based on the mission of providing the most advanced and professional support possible to the total Army.

Headed by a four-star General, Army Materiel Command (AMC) is one of four Major Commands reporting to HQ, Department of the Army. It is headquartered at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUI) is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. The device is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
