U.S. ARMY 205TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Originally approved for the 205th Military Intelligence Group on 13 April 1983, this Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a DUI or unit crest) was redesignated after the Group became the 205th Military Intelligence Brigade on 4 October 1985. The oriental blue and silver gray used throughout are official branch colors of Military Intelligence, and the fleur-de-lis in the center is an allusion to the unit’s activation and service in France during World War II. Subsequent service in Vietnam is symbolized by the red bands and wreath of rice.

Inside the fleur-de-lis are graphics that represent different types of Military Intelligence. A dagger stands for Human Intelligence; a propeller denotes Airborne Imagery Intelligence; and the lightning flash symbolizes Signals Intelligence and its related discipline, Electronic Warfare. The symbols are aligned so their points converge at a single space, representing the convergence of all sorts of Military Intelligence from all types of sources so that Commanders can fully “see” the battlefield. "Vanguard Of Vigilance" identifies the importance of Military Intelligence in steadfastly monitoring all aspects of any given situation.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 205th Military Intelligence Brigade was originally constituted in the Army of the United States as the 205th Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment on 12 July 1944 and activated on 6 August 1944 in France, and before the end of World War II it would take part in three campaigns in the European Theater: Northern France, Rhineland, and Ardennes-Alsace.

Allotted to the Regular Army on 6 October 1950, the Detachment was deployed to Korea and earned credit for participation in eight of that conflict’s campaigns. It was subsequently reorganized and redesignated as the 205th Military Intelligence Detachment and would serve in Vietnam under that designation, taking part in eight campaigns. The unit would undergo one more reorganization and redesignation in 1983 before finally being given its final designation as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 205th Military Intelligence Brigade on 16 October 1985.

Deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Brigade was unfortunately caught up in the Abu Ghraib detention scandal, leading to the unit’s deactivation and the casing of its colors on 21 June 2007.
