U.S. ARMY 155TH ARMORED BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also called a unit crest or a DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team was approved in 1974 while the unit was still designated as the 155th Armored Brigade; it was officially redesignated to reflect the unit’s new status and with a new description on 25 July 2007. The nickname “Dixie Thunder” conveys the Brigade’s origins in the Deep South state of Mississippi and the type of firepower it has wielded since it was first formed as an Armored Cavalry unit in 1951. Both yellow and green are used heavily in the insignia; for a brief time they were both Armor colors, but today yellow is used for both Armor and Cavalry units. A white saltire suggesting strong support is inspired by the canton in the Mississippi state flag.

An upraised trident implies the Brigade’s striking power, and it is also found in the crest of the Mississippi Army National Guard to which the Brigade belongs. Thunderbolts make up the tines and hearken back to the “Dixie Thunder” moniker, while the black areas abutting the saltire symbolize iron and stand for strength.

The 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team is the largest unit in the Mississippi National Guard with approximately 3,500 Soldiers. It is headquartered in Tupelo and contains subordinate units covering the entire Magnolia State.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
