Representing the most senior enlisted member of the Corps, the rank insignia for Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps (SMMC) shares its four rockers and three chevrons with the other E-9 ranks of Master Gunnery Sergeant and Sergeant Major, but the unique nature of this position is symbolized by the treasured Eagle, Globe, and Anchor bookended by two five-pointed stars.
The standard SMMC sew-on chevrons feature gold or green stripes embroidered on a scarlet or khaki background, while the version worn on the Evening Dress jacket features an outsized base taken from USMC chevrons worn in the 1890s. Gold chevrons are reserved for the Blue Dress coat and Evening Dess jackets and come only on a scarlet background. Green chevrons on scarlet material are worn on the Service “A” uniform coat, and green chevrons embroidered on khaki-colored cloth are designed for wear on both short- and long-sleeve khaki shirts.
Note that only the Large (male) size of this insignia is available in each of these configurations.
