The Private First Class sew-on chevron, or stripe, is available in men’s and women’s sizes and is manufactured in three color patterns in order to match the different types of uniforms for which their wear is prescribed. Gold stripes on a scarlet background are worn with Blue Dress Coats, while green stripes on scarlet are worn on the Service Uniform coat. Green stripes set on a khaki background are prescribed for khaki long-sleeve and short-sleeve shirts.
On coats and the long-sleeve khaki shirt, the single chevron of the PFC rank insignia are sewn onto both sleeves using thread of the same color as the insignia’s background material. The insignia is centered horizontally on the outer half of the sleeve with the chevron’s point up and its tip four inches below the shoulder seam. For short-sleeve khaki shirts, the chevron is centered between the shoulder seam and either the bottom of the sleeve (men) or the peak of the cuff (women).
