USMC MASTER GUNNERY SERGEANT SEW-ON CHEVRONS

The distinctive “pineapple”—actually an exploding bomb—is the focal point of the Master Gunnery Sergeant’s shoulder sleeve rank insignia (E-9). The standard insignia is manufactured in large and small size (men’s and women’s, respectively) with different combinations of gold or green chevrons embroidered on scarlet or khaki material. A distinctive version based upon late 19th-century USMC chevrons, issued only to Staff Noncommissioned Officers (SNCOs), is worn on the SNCO Evening Dress jacket.

Gold on red is worn on the Blue Dress coat; green on red is for the Service coat; green on khaki is for both long- and short-sleeve khaki shirts; and SNCO is obviously for the Evening Dress jacket.

The Master Gunnery Sergeant insignia is worn centered horizontally on all jackets, coats, and shirts. On all uniform components except the men’s and women’s short-sleeve shirts, the insignia is positioned so that its top is 3 inches below the shoulder seam (NCOs and junior enlisted Marines use 4 inches). Placement is slightly more complicated on the short-sleeve khaki shirt; men center the device between the sleeve bottom and the shoulder seam, while women center it between the shoulder seam and the peak of the cuff.
