U.S. ARMY AIR TRAFFIC SERVICES COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The U.S. Army Air Traffic Services Command Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was originally approved on 31 October 2003, just over two months after the organization was activated in a special ceremony held at Howze Field at Fort Rucker (renamed for Novosel in 2023) in Alabama. Although its ultramarine blue and golden orange colors are those of Army Aviation units with which the Air Traffic Services Command is associated, orange is also a color of the Signal Corps, which was a proponent of ATSC forebearer units called Army Aviation Operating Detachments (AAOD).

The phoenix is used because of the legend of its birth from its own ashes, reflecting the rebirth of Air Traffic Service as a part of U.S. Army Forces Command. A globe with longitudinal and latitudinal lines represents the worldwide scope of the Command’s mission, as well as its sphere of influence. The lightning flash is a symbol of Army readiness and the striking speed of the Commands Signal background. “Freedom’s Voice” is the unit motto, inscribed in gold to denote excellence.
