U.S. NAVY INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN (IT) RATING BADGE

The creation of the Information Systems Technician (IT) rating can be traced back to 1999, when the now-disestablished Radioman (RM) rating—the product of the merger of the Radioman (RM) and Data Processing Technician (DP) ratings—was redesignated to IT. Four jobs were created within the rating in order to address the breadth and scope of the ever-expanding world of information technology: Communication Technician, Network Technician, Security Technician, and Security Manager. In 2010, the Navy augmented the rating with the creation of the Information Systems Technician Submarines (ITS) service rating.

Eligibility requirements for Sailors wishing to become IT professionals is particularly strict because of the sensitive nature of the information and communications they will deal with on a routine basis. In order to attend the Class “A” Technical School held at the Center for Information Dominance Unit Corry Station in Pensacola, both Sailors and their immediate family members must be U.S. citizens. Additionally, they must undergo a Single Scope Background Investigation to determine if they are eligible for a Top Secret security clearance enabling them to access sensitive compartmentalized information.

The Class “A” school, which follows basic training, lasts approximately 24 weeks and consists of group instruction, computer labs, and ship simulators designed to acquaint Sailors with the fundamentals of software systems such as Microsoft, Cisco, and Oracle, computer hardware, networking, automated data processing, and other subject areas related to information and communications systems.
