U.S. ARMY ELEMENT, USSOCOM JOINT FORCES COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly referred to as a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) for the Special Operations Command, Joint Forces Command, U.S. Army Element was approved on 10 December 2003. It features a shield that uses a pile in the center to divide it into three segments of ultramarine blue, black, and green, with blue denoting the air and sea missions, green signifying ground operations, and black for the Special Operations operating environment combining the capabilities of all three (Air, Sea, Land). Gold used for the border of the pile simulates a V-shape that stands for victory and power.

Three symbols—a trident, lightning flash, and dagger—are adapted here from the Special Operations Command, Atlantic Command, the immediate predecessor of the Special Operations Command Joint Forces Command. The unique capabilities of Navy SEAL Teams and Special Warfare watercraft are represented by the trident; a lightning bolt is an emblem of Air Force Special Operations’ rapid response and power; and the dagger has been associated with Army forces (Special Forces, Rangers, Civil Affairs, and PSYOP) since World War II.

The trident, a symbol of naval prowess, symbolizes the Navy Seal teams and special boat units.  The lightning bolt denotes the Air Force Special Operations, rapid response and aerospace power.  The dagger associated with the Army forces (Special Forces, Rangers, PSYOP and Civil Affairs), also represents total military preparedness and readiness for deployment.  Each symbol represents the three parts that together with the superb non-SOF personnel, form the whole of the Command.

Joint Forces Command is a sub-unified combatant of the United States Special Operations Command and is headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
