Nicknamed “Diamond Brigade” and adapting the unofficial motto “Tough As Diamonds” as a nod to the design of the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia also used on its Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB), the 75th Field Artillery Brigade’s official motto is “Taut Lanyards,” a phrase referring to the cord on old artillery pieces that were pulled for each salvo: a lanyard that is taut is ready to be fired on a moment’s notice. (whether or not the “Diamond” nickname sprang from the insignia or if the insignia was designed based upon the moniker is not clear.)
Earlier iterations of the Brigade took part in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater campaign during World War II, and during the First Gulf War the Brigade helped provide a defensive bulwark for Saudi Arabia before taking part in the lightning-fast ground offensive that ejected the Iraqi military forces from Kuwait in just 100 hours. During the mid-1990s, the Brigade’s high level of professionalism was recognized with an Army Superior Unit Award for the period 5 April 1997 to 21 October 1997.
More recently, the Brigade or its components have been honored for their service in the Global War on Terrorism, with a detachment of its Headquarters and Headquarters Brigade receiving a Meritorious Unit Commendation for the period ranging from 16 December 2012 to 15 September 2013.
