Approved on 20 December 1973 as a Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, the 411th Engineer Brigade Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB, uses geometrical shapes and heraldic hues to convey information about the Brigade and its mission. Scarlet and white are used almost exclusively to reflect the Brigade’s designation in the Corps of Engineers; they have been the branch colors since 1872.
A vertical saw-toothed bar and a multitude of right angles evoke the idea of construction and design (the right angles are also facsimiles of carpenter’s squares), and the two right angles in the middle form the image of an “X, the symbol used in military diagrams to indicate a Brigade. The four sides of the square, combined with the “X” and the saw-toothed bar to create the Roman numeral XI, reflect the Brigade’s numerical designation of 411.
