From the end of World War I to the World War II beaches at Salerno and Normandy, the 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade (ADAB) has a history of defending troops on the move.

The history continued with the modern unit seeing action in the Persian Gulf and being stationed in South Korea.

Active since 2008, the 35th ADAB remains part of the part of the U.S. Eighth Army and is stationed at Osan Air Base.

The “Dragon Brigade” executes air and missile defense and lives by the mission statement: “On order, 35th Air and Missile Defense Brigade conducts joint and combined theater air and missile defense operations of defended asset list priorities in order to protect key assets, preserve sortie generation capabilities, build combat power, and provide freedom of action to enable Combined Forces Command/U.S. Forces Korea campaign objectives.”

The 35th Defense Artillery Brigade was originally activated during June 1918 as Coast Defense of the Potomac. Based at Fort Hunt (Virginia), the 35th Coast Artillery Brigade arrived in France for the final months of World War I, participating in the Meuse-Argonne campaign.

After being deactived following the first European conflict, the unit was reorganized about a year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It served in Italy and France, highlighted by beach landings at Salerno and Normandy.

Following World War I, the unit was deactivated at Camp Kilmer (New Jersey) during 1945 and reformed at Fort Bliss (Texas) during November 1948.

Nine years later, it was selected to be the first Nike Ajax guided missile command, helping protect the nation’s capital.

The CSIB features the colors of Air Defense Artillery (scarlet and gold) and features three mountain peaks blending into an arrow directed upward. It symbolizes a missile hitting an enemy aircraft.
