U.S. ARMY 73RD INFANTRY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 73rd Infantry Brigade was an Ohio National Guard unit that was in the lineage of the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Its formation was preceded by the 1968 reduction of the 37th Infantry Division, originally constituted in 1917 and veteran of two World Wars, to a single brigade due to Army realignment of its force structure. That single brigade was designated as the 73rd Infantry Brigade, 38th Infantry Division on 15 February 1968.

After a stint as an element of the Indiana Army National Guard’s 38th Infantry Division, it was reorganized and redesignated as separate brigade in the Ohio Army National Guard in March 1977. In 1980, it was given the assignment of Theater Defense Brigade, which in wartime would task the unit with the defense of the Aleutian Islands.

Structural changes brought on by budget cuts led the Army to begin another round of reorganization in 1993, and the 73rd Brigade was reorganized as the 37th Brigade. It would go on to be redesignated as the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in 2007.

Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
