U.S. ARMY 325TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 1ST BATTALION BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

The 325th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion beret flash and background trimming (oval) has been worn by the Battalion’s personnel since 8 July 1992. Its white border and blue field reflect the organization’s origins and history as an Infantry unit, since white was the original branch color and blue has had designation since 1903. Its design is identical to that of the 325th Infantry Regiment flash except for the addition of a blue notch on the left and right side of the blue shield, indicating the Battalion’s numerical designation within the organization.

Also called an organizational flash, the beret flash of the 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment is worn centered on the stiffener of the maroon beret to signify the unit’s Airborne status. Officers wear their non-subdued, pin-on insignia of grade centered on the flash, while their enlisted counterparts (NCOs and Junior Enlisted) wear their Distinctive Unit Insignia or their Regimental Distinctive Insignia if their unit lacks a  DUI. In this unit’s case, Enlisted personnel will wear the 325th Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia on the flash. Extremely rare exceptions to this guidance for Enlisted Soldiers can be found in in paragraph 4-10(e) of DA PAM 670-1.

Ovals are technically called background trimming because they are behind/beneath the Parachutist or Air Assault badges. The main portion of the badge (i.e., excluding the “crests” of a star and a star-and-wreath on some Parachutist badges) is centered on the oval, and the outermost edges of the items are used when measuring distance between other badges, ribbons, pockets, etc. A badge and its oval are considered to be one item when worn together.

The oval-badge combination is worn Service Uniforms, specifically on the shirts and coats of the AGSU and ASU (including when the ASU is worn as a Dress uniform), and by female Soldiers on the blue or green Army Maternity Tunic.

The 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment is assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, nicknamed the “Falcon Brigade.” Both it and the Regiment’s 2nd Battalion are capable of executing parachute assaults anywhere in the world on extremely short notice. The 1st Battalion has fought in campaigns during both World Wars, two Armed Forces Expeditions, two Persian Gulf War campaigns, Kosovo, and in at least two campaigns in the War on Terrorism. Since 2003, the Battalion’s outstanding service has been recognized with a Presidential Unit Citation, two Valorous Unit Awards, and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

1st Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment is stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
