U.S. ARMY 325TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 325th Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, often called a “unit crest” or a DUI, was first approved on 22 April 1925, a time when the Regiment was assigned to the Organized Reserve. It was redesignated on 24 October 1942 for the 325th GlideR Infantry Regiment, Organized Reserve and again on 9 January 1956 for the 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment on 9 January 1956. On 6 June 1958, the insignia’s redesignation process came full circle when it was redesignated for the 325th Infantry Regiment.

White was the original branch color for Infantry and blue has held that designation since 1903, and both are included to reflect the organization’s beginnings in that branch. A blue disc on the chief (upper third) of the shield is taken from the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 82nd Division, the unit to which the Regiment’s was first assigned; the white temple in the disc is from the Seal of the State of Georgia, where the unit was first organized. The two-barred cross is called a Lorraine cross and commemorates the heavy action the Regiment saw in the province of the same name in World War I. “Let’s Go,” the unit motto, reflects the zeal and enthusiasm of the Regiment’s personnel to serve their country.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

Constituted as the 325th Infantry on 5 August 1917 and assigned to the 82nd Division, the Regiment fought in three campaigns before returning stateside and being demobilized in the spring of 1919. It was reconstituted in the Organized Reserves under the same designation and again assigned to the 82nd Airborne, which of course was later redesignated as the 82nd Airborne Division.

On 15 August 1942 it was redesignated as the 325th Glider Infantry and fought in a half-dozen campaigns, starting in Sicily and ending in Central Europe and earning two Arrowhead devices for being part of assault landings in the Normandy and Rhineland campaigns. The Regiment’s outstanding service during the war was recognized with two Presidential Unit Citations; two French Croix de Guerre with Palm awards and a French Fourragere; a Military Order of William (Degree of the Knight of the Fourth Class); a Netherlands Orange Lanyard; and a Belgian Fourragere and two citations in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army.

The Regiment was relieved from assignment to the 82nd Division and reorganized as the 82nd Infantry in 1957. In the three-and-a-half decades between 1965 and 2000, the Regiment took part in three Armed Forces Expeditions, all three campaigns of the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War (where it earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation), and served in a peacekeeping role during the Kosovo Defense campaign. What’s more, it was the recipient of three Army Superior Unit Awards between 1987 and 1998.

In the War on Terrorism, the Regiment is “officially” credited with participation in just two campaigns—but in reality it just means its “decorations per campaign” average is very, very high. Not including awards for individual Battalion elements, the Regiment was tapped for a Presidential Unit Citation in 2003, six Valorous Unit Awards between 2003 and 2008, and a Meritorious Unit Commendation in 2011.

Since the inactivation of its 3rd Battalion in 2006, the 325th Infantry Regiment has consisted of its 1st and 2nd Battalions, both assigned to the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division and stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
