U.S. ARMY 308TH CIVIL AFFAIRS BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 308th Civil Affairs Brigade was originally constituted in the Organized Reserve Corps (predecessor of today's Army Reserve) as the 308th Military Government Group on 1 March 1949 and activated in Chicago three weeks later on 24 March 1949. It was reorganized and given its current designation on 16 September 1992. As of Autumn 2023, the Brigade is allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve and assigned to the 353rd Civil Affairs Command, U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne). It is headquartered in Homewood, Illinois.

The 308th Civil Affairs Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved for the 308th Civil Affairs Group on 20 October 1971, but was redesignated (with revised descriptions and symbolism) for the Brigade on 3 February 1993. Purple and white, official colors of the Civil Affairs branch, are used for the graphics of a globe (denoting the worldwide capabilities of the unit) and as scroll (an allusion to the civil and military law the unit upholds).

Gold, the color of excellence in heraldry, is used for the globe’s gridlines, the upraised sword, and the scroll on which the unit motto is inscribed. The scarlet used for the motto “Advise Organize Direct” is associated with courage and valor. An upraised sword is a symbol of the Brigade’s mission to maintain civil order, using martial means if necessary, and to support all phases of military operations.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
