United States Air Force 1st Lieutenants wear regular-sized rank insignia, listed as “Full Size” in the drop-down selection box, on the wearer’s left of the Flight Cap. The single silver bar is oriented so that the long axis is vertical, then centered vertically between the cap’s top and bottom edges and positioned so that the leading edge is 1.5” from the cap’s front crease.

Flight caps were originally introduced to U.S. military forces during World War I, when troops were given what was called an “overseas cap” to replace the much bulkier and easily crushed Campaign Hats. Though officially discontinued as an issue item after World War I, the overseas cap remained a favorite among some Army units, particularly in Aviation, and was reissued in 1939 as a Garrison Cap. Although the Army eliminated Garrison Caps in 2000, they remain in use under different designations in every other branch of the Armed Forces of the United States.

The Miniature 1st Lieutenant metal rank insignia is authorized only for personnel serving as Pararescue Personnel and Combat Rescue Officers, Special Tactics Officers, Weather Parachutists, Air Liaison Officers, and Tactical Air Control and is worn on below the flashes of their respective berets. Miniature rank insignia is centered 1/8” below the bottom of the flash device, with the bottom edge of the rank insignia level with and next to (but not covering) the beret’s black border trim.
