U.S. ARMY 79TH THEATER SUSTAINMENT COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 79th U.S. Army Theater Sustainment Command Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), commonly referred to as a unit crest, was originally approved for the 79th Division on 17 May 1935. It has been redesignated several times to match the unit’s changing designations and duties, first in June 1970 for the 79th U.S. Army Reserve Command (this change included adding the motto “To Do For Country”), and again in December 2009 for the 79th U.S. Army Reserve Sustainment Support Command. It was amended on 4 March 2010 to allow the production of the insignia in pairs. According to the U.S. Army Reserve official Web site, the unit is now designated the 79th Theater Sustainment Command (TSC) and wears this insignia.

While the red, white, and blue in the insignia are a reference to our Nation, they are also the colors of the French National Flag, an allusion to the 79th Division’s relief of a portion of the French 157th Division and subsequent occupation of the Avocourt Sector (Lorraine) in World War I. The falcon on a mount is in commemoration of the 79th Division’s capture of Montfuacon on 27 September 1918 during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

One of only two Theater Sustainment Commands in the Army Reserve, the 79th TSC stands ready to provide trained and prepared logistics units for deployment at any point on the globe. First tasked as a Support unit in 2009 when it was designated the 79th U.S. Army Reserve Sustainment Support Command, the Command transitioned to Theater Sustainment in Fiscal Year 2017 in order to provide regionally aligned logistics support for U.S. Army Africa (AFRICOM).
As of Winter 2024, the 79th TSC provides mission command and operational-level sustainment support for United States Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF) and other Army forces, as well as United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), Joint, and Multinational Forces.

Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
