U.S. ARMY ELEMENT SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The U.S. Army Selective Service System Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved on 13 November 1987. In its center are three crossed arrows behind a drum and in front of the top of a blue arch; the arch and arrows are adapted from the seal of the Department of Defense, with the arrows representing the three Military departments (Army, Navy, Air Force). They also allude to the three components of the Army: Regular, National Guard,  Reserve.

The Drum represents the “Call to Arms” and also recalls the imagery of a drum-and-fife corps used both to control military formations and inspire the personnel making them up. The green laurel wreath denotes service and achievement.

Although the Army had conscripted troops for service prior to World War I, it wasn’t until 1917 that Congress enacted the Selective Service Act (SSA) to enable a military draft. The SSA was the first conscription in the United States in which those selected to service were not able to fulfill their obligations by sending someone else in their place. The Selective Service System has been tweaked over the decades, with some of the most important changes involving the linking of Federal aid for college and other purposes with registration in the Selective Service System.
