NEW JERSEY ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HEADQUARTERS UNIT CREST (DUI)

The current Distinctive Unit Insignia of the New Jersey Army National Guard Element’s Joint Force Headquarters was approved for wear on 1 October 2003. During the twenty-one years leading up to this date, the insignia had been worn by personnel in the HQ, State Area Command, New Jersey Army National Guard. It was also worn by the members of the HQ and HQ Detachment, as well as non-color bearing units), of the New Jersey Army National Guard from 1971 to 1982. It was originally approved for State Staff Corps and Departments, New Jersey National Guard on 8 November 1928.

A lion in profile symbolizes the heritage of the state’s original settlers, which included many of English or Dutch descent; conveniently, the coat of arms for both countries includes a lion. The four red lozenges, or diamond shapes, are taken from the coat of arms of Sir George Carteret, and the white and red twisted wreath upon which the lion’s head rests reflects the fact that the state’s predominant permanent settlement was of English origin.

New Jersey National Guard Element Joint Force Headquarters is located at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
