NEW JERSEY ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ PATCH (SSI)

Also called a unit patch, the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn by New Jersey Army National Guard (ARNG) assigned to the Joint Force Headquarters (HQ) of state’s National Guard was originally approved HQ and HQ Detachment, New Jersey National Guard on 21 September 1955 and amended shortly thereafter (7 October 1955) to correct the description.

That description would be amended again when the insignia was redesignated for the HQ, State Area Command, New Jersey National Guard on 30 December 1983, and once on October 2003 when the insignia was given its current designation for the New Jersy ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ.

A lion in profile reflects the fact that the colonists of New Jersey hailed from both England and Denmark—a happy coincidence when designing heraldry for the state since the coats of arms of both countries prominently feature a lion.

The original settlements in the State were English and Dutch.  The coats of arms of both countries bear lions. Four lozenges (diamonds) on the lion are taken from the coat of arms of Sir George Carteret, one of the state’s two original lords proprietor (recipients of a royal charter), while the preponderance of English colonists is reflected in the twisted wreath of red and white, national colors of England.

The original proprietor was Sir George Carteret whose arms bore the four red lozenges.  As the predominant permanent settlement was of English origin, the twists of the wreath are white and red.
