U.S. NAVY MASTER E-9 CHIEF PETTY OFFICER COLLAR DEVICE

Two silver stars atop a fouled anchor with  single rays pointing down is the insignia for Master Chief Petty Officers in the United States Navy. The pair of stars reflects the grade of E-9, two grades above that of Chief Petty Officer (E-7). This grade was not established until 1958 when Congressional legislation authorized two new enlisted grades for all branches of the Armed Forces of the United States in an attempt to retain the knowledge and experience of veteran noncommissioned officers.

Master Chief Petty Officers wear collar grade insignia on short-sleeve shirts (Service Khaki and Summer White uniforms), Navy Coveralls, and the Service Dress White (SDW) coat. Until 2020, two types of SDW coats are authorized for female CPOs; the traditional variation featured a standard coat collar and lapels, while another introduced in 2017 uses the same type of standing collar, or choker, found on the version of the SDW for male CPOs. The wear-out date for the old female SDW and possession of the new choker-style is 31 January 2020. Additionally, collar grade insignia was worn by Master CPOs on the Aviation Working Green uniform. Although this uniform was phased out in 2011, we continue to manufacture and sell the Officer and CPO versions because of demand from veterans, uniform collectors, and others.

Please select “Pin Back” in the selection box to the right if you are purchasing this insignia for wear on a choker-style SDW. Choose “Clutch Back” for insignia designed for wear on all other uniform types.

On short-sleeve shirts and the Navy Coveralls, the insignia is centered between the lower and front edges of the collar, one-inch from either edge and tilted at roughly 45 degrees so that an imaginary bisecting line through the collar point runs through the insignia’s vertical axis. For the choker version of the SDW, the insignia is placed upright, one inch from the vertical edge of he collar with the shank of the anchor parallel to it; the insignia is centered between the collar’s top and bottom edges. On the old female SDW, the insignia is placed upright at the bottom of the collar (just above the notch for the lapel), one inch above the bottom of the collar and centered between the seam and the collar’s outer edge).
