U.S. NAVY MUSICIAN (MU) BALL CAP DEVICE

Anyone who has seen any of the Navy’s eleven official bands and numerous ensembles cannot help but be impressed with the professionalism and musical expertise on display by the Sailors serving in the Musician  (MUS) rating. Equally notable is just how committed the Navy is in its support of MU Sailors, as well as its recognition of the value of a broad array of musical genres.

There is no higher honor for Sailors in the MU rating than to be selected to serve in one of the “preferentially staffed” bands: The U.S. Navy Band based in Washington, D.C. or the Naval Academy Band in Annapolis. The U.S. Navy Band comprises the Concert Band, one of the world’s premiere wind ensembles; the Ceremonial Band, which performs at official military, governmental, and other notable events; the choral group Sea Chanters, which sings a cappella sea chanteys and patriotic songs; the Commodores, a top-flight jazz orchestra specializing in Big Band sounds; Country Current, which covers the country genre with songs ranging from bluegrass to Top Billboard hits; and the Cruisers, with their renditions of hits drawn from the whole spectrum of contemporary music.

Augmenting these two band are nine active-duty fleet bands; six are stationed at Naval Bases and Stations in the continental U.S., while the remainder are located at Pearl Harbor, Naples (Italy, not Florida!), and Yokosuka, Japan. Regardless of personal musical tastes, anyone who appreciates excellence in musicianship must give a tip of the hat to the MU Sailors performing in these bands for not only their flawless execution, but also their ability to effortlessly transition from one style to another.

Rounding out the Navy’s musical groups are eight ensembles with a repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary music range in size from duos to octets featuring instruments such as woodwinds, brass, and clarinet (to name a few) and choral performances.
