U.S. NAVY CWO BANDMASTER SOFT EPAULETS

One of the major strengths of Chief Warrant Officers is the extensive, hands-on experience they have gained by honing the skills of their rating for many years. In the case of Lieutenant Commander John Pastin, that experienced translated into a memorable career as leader of the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C.

Pastin’s trek from Chief Warrant Officer to Lieutenant Commander leading one of the world’s most acclaimed bands began in 1968 when he entered the Navy as an instrumentalist (woodwinds, to be precise). Over the next few years, he expanded into non-instrumental field such as arraignments, conducting, and voice, all of which proved to be stepping stones to become leader of the Atlantic Fleet Show Band, as well as head up the Rehearsal Division and Jazz Studies program at the Armed Forces School of Music. Pastin was selected as a Warrant Officer in 1982, followed soon after by commissioning as an officer and assignments to lead seveal Navy bands, including the Navy Show Band, Navy Band Orlando, and eventually the United States Navy Band.

Although Pastin led the United States Navy Band in some highly memorable performances, including concerts at the Korean War Veterans Memorial celebration in 1996 and the 1998 re-dedication of the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina, the Band’s appearance in Russia before an audience of over 300,000 in July, 1996 is likely the most noteworthy. Taking part in naval celebrations held in St. Petersburg (for the 300th Anniversary of the Russian Navy) and in Kaliningrad (Baltic International Festival of the Fleets), the Brass Quintet, a jazz combo, and the Concert and Ceremonial Band gave eleven performances.

Pastin also oversaw the Navy Band when it introduced the Concert on the Avenue, breathtaking shows held at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. featuring members drawn from almost all of the Navy Band’s major bands and ensembles. Concerts on the Avenue continues to this day, with shows presented on selected Tuesdays during the summer months.

Today, Pastin serves as the Dean of the College of Performing Arts at Rowan University, a public institution in Glassboro, New Jersey.
