U.S. NAVY MASTER-AT-ARMS (MA) BALL CAP DEVICE

Following completion of Recruit Training, Seaman Apprentices wishing to pursue the Master-at-Arms (MA) rating will attend the Class “A” Technical School at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Over a period of approximately nine weeks, up-and-coming MAs will learn the basics of military and civil law, crime prevention, first aid, methods of physical restraint, communications, antiterrorism techniques, and other disciplines. Training consists of both individual and group instruction, complemented with computer simulations and practical applications.

Sailors or potential recruits considering the Master-at-Arms career path should be aware of several details, although none of them should come as a surprise. For starters, Sailors must maintain secret security clearance eligibility as determined by the Department of the Navy’s Central Adjudication (DONCAF), which is an organization within the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Second, MAs must qualify and maintain unit-specific weapons proficiency. Lastly, there is no Sea-Shore Flow model for the MA rating; instead, the rotation is between the Continental United States/Outside Continental United States, or in/outside the United States.

Masters-at-Arms will attend Class “C” school to earn certifications, particularly those that are required for their particular strand. Sailors on track for jobs as Independent Duty MAs, in addition to other certifications, must qualify as Military Police Investigators and Antiterrorism Training Supervisors. There are particular billets that can help fast-track MAs’ careers. Examples include the Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific in Bangor, Washington; Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic at King’s Bay, Georgia; and TACAMO (Take Charge and Move Out), a survivable communications link for use in a nuclear-war scenario which includes the U.S. Navy’s Strategic Communications Wing One at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
