U.S. ARMY MILITARY SURFACE DEPLOYMENT AND DISTRIBUTION COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Based at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (MSDDC) is the United States Army component of the United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) and is responsible for surface deployment and distribution of cargo and materiel within the Department of Defense’s global transportation system. To fulfill its motto of “Serving the Armed Forces,” in a typical year the MSDDC oversees and directs the movement of close to 4 million measurement tons (a measurement ton is volume based, equaling 40 cubic U.S. feet) of ocean cargo in and out of two dozen ports, utilizing the 10,000 containers and 1300-plus railroad cars it owns outright to facilitate the movement.

A green disc in the center of the insignia represents land and bridges the smaller wavy discs, which represent oceans, to allude to land transportation and ocean terminal service. Three annulets symbolize wheels and allude to movement, while the broad white broad over the discs denotes guidance and direction in controlling the movement of cargo and passengers. Both the arrowhead and the colors white and green have been taken from the Command’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI); the arrow also recalls the organization’s military background and the air transportation services it performs. “Serving The Armed Forces” is the Command motto.

The Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved for the Military Traffic Management and Terminal Service on 6 January 1969. It was redesignated on 10 December 1974 for the Military Traffic Management Command before it was given its current designation with an effective date of 1 January 2004.
