U.S. ARMY COMBINED FORCES COMMAND-AFGHANISTAN UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of Combined Forces Command—Afghanistan uses a dancette, or zig-zag line of partition, in the center of the insignia to create a heraldic representation of the rugged mountain topography for which the region is renowned.

Soaring above, as it were, above the craggy peaks, is an eagle, a traditional national emblem associated with the fight for freedom that is also an ancient symbol of power, victory, and independence. The red, green, and black used for the interior of the shield echo the colors on the national flag of Afghanistan.

Often called a unit crest or referred to by the initialism DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam (DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however).

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the insignia by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
