U.S. ARMY ELEMENT, COMBINED FORCES COMMAND-AFGHANISTAN PATCH (SSI)

The unit patch for the United States Army Element, Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan, officially referred to as a Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Military Operations in Hostile Conditions insignia, was approved on 25 August 2005, with the design also used for the Combat Service ID Badge worn on the blue Army Service Uniform.

The eagle has been a national symbol since the days of the Revolutionary War; here, its spread wings and extended talons display its willingness to fight for survival. Just below the eagle is an image of a rocky, snow-capped peak that epitomizes the tortuous mountain terrain of Afghanistan; the white of the snow is an emblem of the promotion of regional stability and security.

Estbalished in 2003, Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan was the joint operational level HQ for Afghanistan and was also responsible for building up the Afghan Amy and overseeing joint special operation efforts.
