On Coast Guard Dress and Service uniforms, the place-ment of Officer rank stripes depends upon the uniform color. Sleeve stripes are worn on the coats and jackets of blue Dress and Service uniforms (Dinner Dress Blue, Service Dress Blue, etc.), while Hard shoulder boards are used for the white equivalents of those garments. Hard shoulder boards feature a clasp that slides through shoulder loops and is secured with a snap button at the board’s narrow end. In addition to white Dress and Service coats/jackets, Hard boards are also worn by Officers on Reefer and Bridge coats.

Enhanced shoulder boards use a loop of fabric in place of a hasp that allows them to be slid onto the epaulets of shirts, sweaters, and coats. These include the long- and short-sleeve Light Blue shirts worn with the Service Dress Blue “Bravo” and Tropical Blue uniforms; Officers also wear Enhanced shoulder boards on the epaulets of the Bridge coat and the Cardigan and Wooly-Pully sweaters.
