U.S. ARMY 196TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 196th Field Artillery Brigade, whose motto “Hard As Hickory” was adopted in honor of President Andrew Jackson’s nickname and his association with the Brigade’s home state of Tennessee, was originally organized at Chattanooga in the Tennessee National Guard on 30 April 1918. It would undergo a score of redesignations and reorganizations over the nine decades, but the next significant change for the unit came on 1 October 1940, when it was designated as an Artillery unit for the first time—the 1st Battalion, 181st Field Artillery, to be precise.

It wasn’t until 1 November 1973 that the Brigade was assigned its final numerical designation when it was designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 196th Field Artillery Group. Just under five years later, on 1 September 1978, the unit was finally given the designation 196th Field Artillery Brigade, a title it would proudly hold until it was inactivated on 12 July 2008 (it was
was converted and Federally redesignated on 1 September 2008 as the 230th Sustainment Brigade). During its service life, the Brigade was credited with participation in three World War II campaigns—Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe—and two in the Southwest Asia conflict (Liberation and Defense of Kuwait, Cease-Fire).

The 196th Field Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia features two arrows pointing to the peak of the silhouette of a hickory tree, a symbol of strength and also reference to President Jackson and the state of Tennessee; the arrows are an allusion to Lookout Mountain, near the organization point of the Brigade. Three white stars are taken from the Tennessee state flag, and also refer to the three World War campaigns the Brigade fought in.

At the time of its inactivation, many of the Soldiers and much of the materiel were used to form a brand-new unit, the 230th Sustainment Brigade, but it did not inherit the lineage, history, or insignia from the 196th Field Artillery Brigade. The scarlet scroll and yellow letters are a reference to the branch colors of Field Artillery.
