The Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer special position of Command Chief Master Sergeant was born in 1998 out of the previous position of Senior Enlisted Advisor, whose duties were taken for the most part by E-9 First Sergeants E-9. Operating at a higher level in the command hierarchy than an E-9 First Sergeant, Command Chief Master Sergeants serve as the senior advisors at critical levels of large-scale commands and organizations such as Wings, Field Operating Agencies, Direct Reporting Units, Numbered Air Forces and Major Commands. (Note that Chief Master Sergeants who take a Department of Defense-nominated senior enlisted advisor position are designated as Command Chiefs.)
The Command Chief Master Sergeant metal rank insignia is worn on the epaulets of optional uniform garments such as sweaters (Blue Pullover and Blue or White Cardigans) and on the collars of outer garments (All-Weather Coat and Topcoat). In lieu of the diamond that designates First Sergeants is a single star with one ray pointing upward.
