The 3rd Signal Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, was approved shortly before the unit was activated on 16 September 1979. Despite some media reports tracing the Brigade’s lineage back to 1946 and the formation and activation of the 1st Signal Service Corps, the Brigade’s lineage shows no link to that unit; the misunderstanding likely arose because the Brigade was stood up the day after the 1st Signal Service Corps’ colors were cased.
Three lightning flashes denote the Brigade’s expertise in three types of Signal technology—Mobile Subscriber Equipment, Troposcatter, and Tactical Satellite—and are also a reference to the Brigade’s numerical designation. (These technologies inspired the Brigade motto of “TRIPLE THREAT.”) The star in the middle is the symbol of the Brigade’s home state of Texas, home of Fort Cavazos (previously known as Fort Hood) and the Brigade’s headquarters when not deployed. Orange and white are traditional colors of the Signal Corps.
