U.S. ARMY 20TH ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT PATCH (SSI)

It’s not surprising that the design of the 20th Engineer Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, features an embattled castle tower—it’s inspired directly by the Corps of Engineers branch insignia. Look closely at its base, however, and you see it is pointed, indicating the Brigade’s combat support roles. The tower also represents the Headquarters of the Brigade, with the four “arrows” that are facsimiles of a carpenter’s square representing the various combat and construction groups it supports.

Taken together, the tower and white areas (seen in the color patch and the Combat Service ID Badge) suggest an area of heavy construction such as at a military base with runways, roads, compounds, fortifications, etc. Also, a closer examination reveals a red saltire behind the castle (look at the red intersections between the white arrows) that connects to the border, suggesting lines of communication.
