The silver oak leaf and red “A” that has long served as the insignia for Coast Guard Auxiliary Division Chief (DC) now pulls quintuple duty: It is now used to designate four other organizational leadership positions filled by appointment. These include District Directorate Chief (DDC), Auxiliary Sector Coordinator (ASC), Deputy Director (DIRd), and Fellow. Auxiliarists appointed to serve in any of those fives roles are authorized to wear this insignia as a cap “rank” device with the Garrison Cap, as well as on the Auxiliary’s ball caps and on United States Coast Guard unit ball caps.
Guidance for Garrison Cap wear was inspired by the system the Coast Guard employs for its Officers (Commissioned and CWO): the insignia of rank/leadership is placed on the wearer’s right of the Garrison Cap, while a smaller version of the Combination Cap device is worn on the left side. Both insignias’ placement is determined by placing the device center two inches from the front crease of the cap and an inch-and-a-half from the bottom of the cap.
For ball caps, only the insignia reflecting leadership positions is worn. It’s centered and placed below the arcing text “U.S. COAST GUARD” and above the subsequent line (“AUXILIARY” or the name of a Coast Guard unit, e.g. “USCGC BERTHOLF.”
