The diamond in the center of the 82nd Finance Battalion flash and oval is taken from the branch Insignia of the Finance Corps, where it is rendered in gold. This shape was originally used as the insignia of the Finance Corps’ forerunner, the Pay Department, from 1896 to 1912, when it was rendered in silver. It was used again with the establishment of the Finance Department in 1920, and thirty year became that department was reorganized as a basic branch of the Army in 1950.
Officially referred to as an organizational flash, this shield-shaped insignia is worn centered on the maroon beret that was authorized for wear by members of the 82nd Finance Battalion to denote its status as an Airborne unit. Junior Enlisted Soldiers and NCOs wore the 82nd Finance Battalion unit crest (Distinctive Unit Insignia) centered on the flash, while Officers wore their non-subdued insignia of grade on it.
The 82nd Finance Battalion background trimming, or oval, was worn only by those Battalion members authorized to wear a Parachutist or Air Assault Badge. The primary portion of the badge is worn centered on the oval, with the “crest” of a star (Senior Parachutist) or wreath-and-star (Master Parachutist) projecting slightly above the oval. When worn together, the combination of badge and oval count as a single device for measurement and device-placement calculations
Created on 16 October 1992 through the reorganization and redesignation of the 82nd Finance Support Unit, the 82nd Finance Battalion was redesignated as the 82nd Finance Company almost exactly fourteen years later on 17 October 2006; it would go on to be redesignated as the 82nd Financial Management Support Unit.
But the 82nd Finance Battalion was given a new lease on service when the 82nd Sustainment reactivated it during a ceremony held at Fort Bragg on 20 May 2021 (Fort Bragg became Fort Liberty in June 2023). It is not clear if the 82nd Financial Management Support unit is in the lineage of the newly reactivated Battalion.
