The organizational flash (or simply "flash) is a shield-shaped patch with a semi-circular bottom that is worn on the beret. Personnel who have been authorized to war maroon, tan, or green berets wear their unit's distinctive organizational flash on the beret, while all other Soldiers wear the standard Army flash on the black beret. The Distinctive Unit Insignia or Regimental Distinctive Insignia is worn centered on the flash by all Enlisted personnel, while Officers (except Chaplains) wear their nonsubdued rank insignia.
The 82nd Aviation Regiment was first constituted in the Regular Army as the 82nd Aviation Company on 1 September 1957, the same on which it was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division and activated. On 7 December 1962, it was reorganized and redesignated as HQ and HQ Company, 82nd Aviation Battalion, with its requisite organic elements simultaneously constituted and activated as well.
Relieved from its assignment to the 82nd Airborne Division on 15 January 1987, the Battalion was reorganized and redesignated a second time, this time becoming a parent regiment in the U.S. Army Regimental System designated as the 82nd Aviation; in 2005/6, it would be given its current designation of 82nd Aviation Regiment.
The 82nd Aviation Regiment’s subordinate units are stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and are assigned to the Combat Aviation Brigade (formerly the 82nd Aviation Brigade), 82nd Airborne Division.
